Frequently Asked Cremation Questions

How long must we wait after their death before we can cremate a family member at the Grand View location?

Unlike burial, cremation is irreversible. This requires us to be “extra diligent” in obtaining cremation authorization from the legally identified next-of-kin, as well as those from any necessary agencies (such as the medical examiner). During these 48-72 hours; the deceased will be held in a secure, refrigerated environment.

Do you use a third-party crematory at the Grand View location?

No. All cremations are performed with dignity in our own crematory.

Can I view the cremation?

Grand View offers an optional “Witness Cremation” service, where family and friends can say a final farewell just before the cremation process starts. The Witness Cremation service allows you to join us in the crematory room where you can be more involved if you wish. Some families find the service to be a meaningful and healing part of the process.

Can I purchase an urn from another source, or must I buy one from you?

We provide you with a basic plastic urn.  You can purchase a different urn from any source you like. If you wish our assistance to find an urn you desire, we will be glad to help.

What should I do with the cremation ashes?

There are many things you can do with your loved one’s cremated remains (“ashes”), including simply taking them home with you for safekeeping in the urn supplied with the cremation service. If you are uncertain about what you want to do, you can be patient, take the urn home, and decide later.   After all, there are a lot of options: scattering them on land or sea is one of the most common; but you can also use the cremated remains in keepsake jewelry or to create meaningful pieces of art; or inter the urn in a ground burial site or a columbarium. There is no have-to-do; there’s only a want-to-do (and you are in complete control of it). If you’re curious about your options, just give us a call. We’ll share what we know.

How long does it take to cremate a body?

Usually the actual cremation takes between 2 – 2.5 hours. The body is reduced to about 3-7 pounds of ash. A cool-down period follows, and then the cremated remains are processed for a uniform appearance.

Do you have clothes on when you are cremated?

You would be surprised how often we hear this question! Clothing is optional and so is the type of clothes you wish to wear. Some people might choose to be undressed so as to ‘go out’ the same way they ‘came in’ to the world. In most cases, families choose to have their loved one dressed.

Can we arrange to bury ashes at a cemetery?

Yes, you can. The burial can be in-ground, or your loved one’s cremation urn can be placed in a columbarium niche.

If we choose cremation, does my loved one have to be embalmed?

Embalming is not required.  Grand View does not offer embalming services.  If for any reason you wish your loved one to be embalmed, we will assist you in finding funeral home that provides embalming services.
